Saying Goodbye to 2020

2020 wasn’t what any of us expected. Like at all. I mean who knew that a pandemic was going to hit the entire world. Worldwide, we have had over 80,000,000 cases reported and approximately 1,800,000 deaths. Coronavirus has been painful, scary, and devastating to so many people. And I know that a lot of people are ready to close the door entirely on the year. But I just wanted to pause for a minute to remind you that this year was not a waste, it wasn’t all bad. There’s also been a lot of good, whether we’ve taken the time to see it or not.

For the entirety of 2020, I kept a weekly list of good things that happened in my life. It’s something that I’ve done for a couple years now, but I think 2020 was the hardest year for me to write. Picking out good things that happened every week when everything feels negative was not easy. But it reminded me that good things don’t necessarily have to be big, or even entirely good. In previous years, my good things were always fairly big, like volunteering at march break day camp or a well run bake sale. This year, some weeks were as simple as ‘the leaves changed colour’. But isn’t that a beautiful thing that we wouldn’t have otherwise even really noted, is now the biggest thing that we’re seeing? 2020 taught many of us to slow down. It taught us how important our family is.

So today, as we end one year and start another, I’m going to ask you to take some time to reflect. Think about the good things that happened this year. It might be hard at first, you might only think of 1 or 2 and then struggle to come up with the rest. It can be difficult for us to see past the pile of negative things that we are bombarded with constantly from the media. I’m challenging you to write out 20 things that your grateful for from this year. Whether it’s something that happened in your life or someone you love. Try your best to write down 20 things. (p.s. if you can’t find 20, try asking your friends or family what they’re grateful for!)

Here’s a document that you can download or screenshot to print off if you’re one of those people that needs a formal page to write on (like me!). I’ve started you off with one thing that I think is super important to be grateful for, and you can fill in the rest. It doesn’t matter how small they are, write it all down!

Instead of slamming the door on 2020, let’s reflect on every part of 2020, the good and the bad.

Remember to continue looking for good in 2021!

Syd
